Correct pruning improves the health and structure of a tree. A bad pruning job can damage the tree's health and leave it unstable.
There are lots of reasons to prune: to raise the lower canopy, take out diseased or dangerous branches, let more sunlight in, reduce the weight of the canopy, or shape and balance it. Hedges, palms and overgrown bamboo too.
